UK hauliers can order a methane-diesel-powered 13-litre 460hp Volvo FM for the first time.
The fuel, 75% liquefied methane gas and 25% diesel, is more efficient than diesel. Volvo claims it is therefore able to cut fuel consumption by up to 25%.
Commenting on the FM MethaneDiesel (which carries a £30,000 price premium), Mats Franzen, manager strategy and planning at Volvo Trucks, says: “They do admittedly require a larger initial investment. However, in most countries, truck owners will be able to recoup their investment since the price of methane gas is usually considerably lower than the price of diesel.” Volvo expects to sell 100 MethaneDiesel trucks in the UK, Sweden and the Netherlands this year, with sales increasing to 400 in 2012.
