Truswell profits tumble but it's still in the black

PRE-TAX PROFITS at familyowned haulage and distribution firm John Truswell & Sons (Garage) plunged last year, following the loss of two customers and rising fuel costs.
The Pall-Ex member and holder of the 1998 Depot of the
Year award took a £218,000 hit for the year ended 30 June 2005, but still remained in the black with a pre-tax profit of £42,700.
The company says turnoveralso "suffered following the closure of local manufacturing facilities by two substantial customers", while
only part of the rising fuel bill was recovered from customers.
Truswells directors, who include Jim and Ian Truswell, are investing in new equipment in orderto remain prof ftable in the coming year.
The firm, which employs 94 distribution staff out of a total of
119, paid out £3m in wages and salaries during 2005. The company has depots n Barnsley, Sheffield, Scunthorpe and Douglas, Lanarkshire. It also owns 50% of the shares in haulage contractor Steelfreight.
