11EARLY 1,000 fewer people are employed on vehicle licensing now :han when the Conservatives took office two years ago, Transport iecretary Norman Fowler has told Jock Bruce-Gardyne lConserva:Nei in answer to a Commons question.
Mr Fowler said that in March 1981 there were 4,326 staff at the iwansea driver and vehicle licensing centre and 1,783 at its local )ffices, nearly 1,000 fewer than when the Conservatives moved in.
The approximate cost of vehicle and driver licensing in 1980/81 vas £80m and the approximate cost of the previous local authority rystem in 1973, the last full year of operation, was £65.5m revalued it today's prices.
