In CM July 19 on page 58 there is an article by Ron Douglas entitled "Don't scrap old spares".
For many years, we have been reluctant to dispose of buses, engines or spares suitable for re-use in our operating fleet. It is surprising how many parts are interchangeable.
Over many years, this policy has achieved great savings in spares costs, especially if they are not removed until required. Unfortunately, this involves the storage of considerable numbers of 'spare vehicles and the local planning authority says we do not need so many and seeks to curtail our activities.
It would be helpful to us if our policy could be endorsed by Ron Douglas. At the moment, the local surveyor is quoted as saying: "I am not convinced that it is necessary".
