times, of course, they arouse a certain amount of opposition and criticism, but almost invariably these are of a constructive and friendly nature. •Htiwever, matters are • getting even more interesting, because a few days ago we received a telegram reading: " Heartiest congratulations on forceful leading article issue December 17 re sabotage of road transport by lead pciisorring. Submit only issue is when will this nuisance end and what is being' done to see that it does." It is too early to Make any definite answer to the query raised, but we trust that our efforts will meet with some success. In any case, we are not ceasing to press the subject, and-are endeavouring to have it raised in the House of Commons.

Transportation points out that this office will, in future, closely examine applications to provide road-transport services, and will not -issue certificates for new operations unless these be considered necessary to the war effort or to the maintenance of essential civilian economies. They will not be considered to be so unless the services proposed cannot be performed by any existing means for transport, or if they can be so effected they will not be so convenient or expeditious as those proposed. Another consideration is that the new services can be provided despite shortages of critical materials or man-power, without detriment to the war effort resulting from the general demand on these, which will outweigh any publiC benefit which may be derived.
