THE GOVERNMENT does no know how many operator whose vehicles should hay tachographs have still to fi them, Transport Minister Nor man Fowler admitted this week.
He told Shadow Minister Al bert Booth that such figures d not exist, but repeated that a sample Department of Transport survey showed that five per cent of 1,200 lorries checked had still to be fitted, another 11 per cent had uncalibrated tachos, and the others were legally equipped (CM, January 10).
Mr Fowler added that it is up to the DTp's traffic enforcement officers and the police to ensure the law be complied with.
Others suggest that the number of unequipped vehicles could be as high as ten per cent.
