though which gave me the willies quite as badly as the following sent to me by the DoE.
"Nicholas Ridley, Secretary of State for the Environment has signed an order under Section 2 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, banning the shooting of wildfowl.
For the following species — Woodcock, Golden Plover, Coot, Moorhen, Common Snipe — the ban comes into effect at 09.00 hours on January 21, 1987 until January 31, 1987, the end of the shooting season of those species.
For Mallard, Teal, Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Pintail, Pochard, Shoveler, Gadwell, Goldeneye, Greylag, Pink-footed, White-fronted, Canada Geese (for which the shooting season below high water mark ends February 20) the ban lasts for a period of 14 days — until midnight on February 3, 1987.
The only exception is the Capercaillie whose food supply is unaffected by the bad weather."
