• Semperit is introducing a new generation of Semperit truck tyres designed for better retreading. The new design will be progressively incorporated into Semperit's standard ranges of truck tyres throughout this year.
By selecting a tyre that has the right structural characteristics for retreading, a life of as much as 322,000km (200,000 miles) can be safely obtained from one casing, according to Semperit. Operational factors also greatly affect the life of tyres, so high-mileage tyre programmes must normally be based on the retreading of customers' own casings.
Fleet operators are becoming more sophisticated in analysing running costs, argues Semperit. The emphasis is therefore changing from cost per tyre to cost per mile. Retreaciability is consequently expected to become as important as first-life performance in the selection of tyres by fleet owners.
The new generation of Semperit truck tyres employs a casing construction that is claimed to be exceptionally durable, with greatly improved bonding of the steel and rubber compounds. An extra internal steel belt below the tread protects the multi-layered structural belting. This protective belt can take any damage that would otherwise have gone through to the main belting. Not itself contributing to the structural strength of the tyre, the damaged belt can he stripped off and discarded when the tyre is retreaded.
