Road safety campaigners want drowsy driving to be made a criminal offence In the UK in the same way as drink driving.
The call, from road safety charity Brake, follows new legislation in the United States which is poised to make drivers who deprive themselves of sleep for 24 hours liable to 10 years in jail and a $100,000 (182,000) fine.
The new law, which has been passed by law-makers in New Jersey and Is awaiting the Governor's approval, follows the death in 1991 of Maggie McDonnell, who was killed by a driver who had not slept for 30 hours. The driver was acquitted after his lawyer successfully argued that driving while fatigued was not a crime. Now, says Brake, a version of `Maggio's Law' should be considered in Britain.
