B.R.F. Action on Objection Issue
VESTERDAY (Thursday) the 1 operators'. committee of the British Road Federation met to consider the action of the Great Western, and London, Midland and Scottish Railway companies in attempting to secure revolutionary powers of objection.
The issue has arisen on the appeal Mr. S. M. Macadam, A.M.I.A.E., has been elected vice-president of the C.M.U.A. for 1936-1937, and the following are the new members of the National Council:---Messrs. V. Box (Messrs. Edwin Box and Sons), Dewsbury, W. Farnworth, Middleton, J. A. Ferrington, Manchester, J. Morton (John Morton and Sons, Ltd.), Coventry, G. W. Mundy, Camborrie, T. Pearson, Bolton, W. A. Pilkington (Foulkes and Bailey, Ltd.), Manchester, H. Rosewarne, Helston, W. Seddon (Messrs. E. Seddon and Sons), Farravorth, A. Storey, Burnley, and R. McK. Walker (United Molasses Co., Ltd.), Liverpool.

S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, is to give a lecture, this month, at Market Street Hall, Luton, under the auspices of A.R.O. The date is not yet finally fixed.
by the two railway companies against a grant by the Western Licensing Authority to Mr. George Smart (Smart Transport Co.). During the bearing, counsel for the railways submitted that, if an objector proved that there were suitable transport facilities in the district in which, or places between which, an applicant operates or proposes to work, the application should, in law, be dismissed.
Counsel went so far as to apply this argument to applications: for discretionary tonnage or for additional vehicles, and to cases where an applicant is carrying for, or proposes to carry for, customers with whom he was dealing in the basic year.
In view of the vital importance of this submission, the Appeal Tribunal adjourned the hearing, in order that certain national associations might, if they wished, be represented at the resumed sitting. The railway argument will be fully debated at King's Buildings, Smith Square, London, SAVA, on April 20.
The associations consulted are A.R.O., C.M.U.A., Furniture Warehousemen and Removers Association, National Road Transport Employers Federation, and Scottish C.M.U.A.
