IN September next, five new engineer.' ing apprentices will be accepted by the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., Longbridge, Birmingham, for a training period of four. years, or until the age of 21 years is reached. Austin apprenticeship provides a valuable opportunity for modern engineering training, and successful applicants receive comprehensive instruction.

• For the first two years, apprentices receive a general training, which enables them to acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering practice. The apprenticeship course usually begins with experience in the machine shops, followed by work in many branches of foundry practice. Chassis erecting and axle, engine and gearbox assembly usually follow, together with studies of the application of heat treatment. In addition to gaining experience in the road-testing and service departments, maintenance and general engineering are also covered.

Technical training, however, is complementary, and works training, and courses at the Birmingham Central Technical College are arranged in collaboration with the educational authorities.
