ALICENCE for a direct service from London to Beirut, and three extended foreign tours employing special sleeper coaches (" The Commercial Motor ", November 19) was granted to Continental Camping Coaches Ltd. on Tuesday by Mr. D. 1. R. Muir, the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner. Objections by East Kent, Southdown and Glenton to three of the tours were withdrawn when the companies learned that the tours planned were in no way similar to their own.
Objections to a 14-day ski-tour to Austria were withdrawn on the conditions that special sleeper coaches only were employed ; that the tours departed from and returned to London only; that departures for the 1965-6 season be limited to six; and that at least two nights be spent on the coach.
Granting the licence, Mr. Muir stated that he was not happy about imposing conditions for a service which would operate mainly on the Continent, but if the applicant was satisfied, he was prepared to give him permission to go ahead. He understood that the type of coach proposed for the service did not comply with British Conditions of Fitness Regulations, but that the operator had approached the MoT for special dispensation. If this were refused, would the company be prepared to surrender the licence?
Mr. Ron Johnson, managing director of Continental Camping Coaches Ltd., stated that if permission to operate 12-metre Missing coaches were refused by the Ministry, he hoped to have sleeper coaches built in this country and would therefore wish to retain the licence. This was granted, on condition that Mr. Muir was kept informed.
So the next step lies with the Ministry of Transport, whose officials are to examine one of the company's existing MAN Sleepcoaches on December 15. This coach is 5 in. longer than the maximum permissible in this country under present regulations, and identical with some which have already operated in Britain, under special dispensation.
