I N a Parliamentary question just before Christmas, Captain Strickland called the attention of the Minister of Transport to the fact that certain vehicle examiners in the East Midland area had informed operators that, if they used an indigenous alternative fuel, their basic petrol ration would be cut by 50 per cent., and that they would be unable to obtain any supplementary petrol rations. He asked whether this represented the policy of the Government with regard to alternative fuels?

Mr. Montague, Parliamentary Secretary, replied that he was informed that the fuel referred to was being obtained without coupons in breach ofthe Motor Fuel Rationing (No. 2) Order, 1940. Instructions had been issued to the officers concerned that whilst supplementary Petrol rations might be reduced in these circumstances, a reduction of basic rations was not an appropriate remedy. As to the policy of the Government with regard to alternative liquid fuels, the Secretary of Petroleum had referred, that day, to a scheme to encourage operators to use home-produced coal-product fuels, which would take effect early in the New Year._
