County Antrim Driver Sean McCauley was forced by Vehicle Inspectorate traffic examiners to park up for nine hours after they discovered he had falsified a tachograph chart to hide the fact that ho had had insufficient daily rest.
This was revealed when McCauley pleaded guilty to a falsification offence and a daily rest offence before the Leyland magistrates.
Prosecuting for the Vehicle Inspectorate, John Heaton said that in May a vehicle belonging to Ballymena-based Reids Transport, and driven by McCauley, had been stopped in a chock at Bamber Bridge.
When McCauley produced his tachograph records to a traffic examiner it was seen that 116km had not been recorded. The gap between the two charts indicated a rest span of nine hours yet the distance traces showed that the vehicle had moved 116km during the apparent nine-hour break. Asked for an explanation, McCauley had said that others might have driven his vehicle while he was having breakfast at a truck stop at Rugby.
McCauley admitted to being the driver for the 1161cm at a time when he should have been resting. The magistrates fined him £300 with £100 costs.
