CANTER 3C1115 March 2006 The forward control design offers improved loadspace to conventional design, but the compromise is felt in-cab where the layout is often too cramped. Subtle changes to the latest Canter have alleviated some of this, with a bit more legroom very welcome, but the choice between the two design concepts is very much a matter of horses for courses.
The latest offering from Mitsubishi Fuse at 3.5 tonnes shows some evolution along the right lines, with the emphasis very much on improved cabin space and driveability. Both have been addressed and the Canter now has sufficient interior space for two passengers with ease, while the handling has been improved, although motorway work continues to require a light touch to prevent constant steering correction.
The Euro-4 engine line-up, as with most other manufacturers, leaves power virtually unaltered but torque has been significantly boosted, which will aid driveability and the performance of the Canter at the new emissions protocol. For Euro-4 Canter will be employing exhaust gas recirculation technology.
