MODELTESTED/PUBLISHED: 140 03 February 2005 When is a truck not a truck? When it's a Renault Mascott. This supersized van comes with heavy-duty underpinnings thanks to a ladder frame chassis and reinforcing around the load area.
But this added strength shouldn't detract from what is a nimble-handling vehicle, employing all Renault's chassis expertise to allow excellent manoeuvrability.
The 3.0-litre DXi produces either 120 or 160hp with five and six-speeds respectively, together with improved torque characteristics.
If it goes well there's also the small matter of load capacity, which for a panel van is very much on the large side — payloads on the heavier versions are not much off a traditional 7.5-tonner.
But this may be what's holding it back. When people want the qualities of a truck that's what they go for. However the Mascott possesses pretty much all those qualities anyway.
