EAST KENT and Maidstone and District are mounting a campaign against a threat by the Kent County Council to reduce their revenue support.
The operators claim that any reduction might result in reductions in evening, Sunday, and rural services, and could compel them to increase fares on lossmaking routes. One depot may close, some jobs could be lost, and more service reductions may follow in the winter.
The companies say that the Government has agreed to Kent spending £2.87m on bus services this year, but the County has restricted its spending to £2.32m. The companies have urged passengers to write to their councillors and MPs to protest at the possibility of more bus cuts.
A publicity campaign to fight the Kent proposals is being mounted, and passengers are being asked to sign a form to register their protest.
Kent County Council is expected to determine the level of support at its meeting on July 6.
