VILLAINS in the Leeds area will soon find lorry hi-jacking more difficult to accomplish with the introduction of a new branch of the anti-crime Vehicle Observer Corps.
The new branch will be inaugurated on April 1.
Special meeting
Arrangements to finalise the setting-up of the branch will be discussed at a special meeting attended by the police, hauliers and users of road haulage on March 22 at the Montague Burton headquarters in Leeds.
Jack Brown, chairman of the Road Haulage Association's vehicle security committee said of the new branch: "As a result of intensive activity by the London Metropolitan Police and a greater awareness of the need for security measures by road hauliers, London has now become too hot for the villains. They are now trying their luck further afield.
Hunting ground
"Leeds is the Clapham Junction of the Midlands and with the advent of a national network of motorways, is now regarded as being an ideal hunting ground and base for these modern-day highwaymen."
Mr Brown added he hoped to see more Vehicle Observer Corps groups formed the length and breadth of Yorkshire.
