THE SECRETARY of State for Industry Eric Varley officially has opened a major new Rolls Royce diesel engine factory at Shrewsbury.
The new plant is part of a five-year investment programme during which the company will spend £36 million on new buildings and plant.
Most of the production will be concentrated on the new V12 range of military diesel engines in demand by the Ministry of Defence and the Iranian Government to power the "Shir" tank.
In 1979 production of the commercial version of the new CV8 range of engines will start and production is projected to increase by 20 per cent per annum until a capacity of 11,000 units a year is met in 1981.
The new buildings were completed within one year of contracts being placed.
