NEARLY a quarter of the passengers who used Scotland's buses in 1975 had stopped using them by the end of 1982, according to Scottish Office statistics.
The 8,640 buses in the country carried 750m passengers, a 23 per cent drop since 1975, but passenger receipts doubled to £225m. Staff employed fell by 27 per cent, and the virtual elimination of Scottish bus conductors is reflected by a 96 per cent fall in their numbers.
