UNITE THE UNION has asked seven major fuel distributors to talk with it about securing improved tanker driver terms and conditions (Ts&Cs) to avoid industrial action by 3,000 drivers.
Len McCluskey, Unite general secretary, has written to firms asking them to attend a “no strings” summit after meetings with retailers and fuel bosses have come to no avail (CM 24 February).
The letter’s recipients are: BP; DHL; Hoyer; Suckling Transport; TDG; Turners (Soham); and Wincanton.
“I make this invitation without preconditions in a genuine attempt to bring calm and stability to the sector,” McCluskey says.
The union is arguing for fuel tanker drivers to receive fixed national Ts&Cs, stating: “One issue certain to be discussed by the tanker drivers is preparations for possible strike action.” A tanker driver adds: “It’s about a minimum standard for the industry – and that means health and safety and professionalism.” As CM went to press, none of the fuel distributors were available to comment.
