A RECENT ISSUE contained a flyer for a CPC Conference in Birmingham and a feature previewing the forthcoming Directive (CM 27 October).
I am now a freelance driver, having spent many years in management in the industry. I also get involved in some consultancy work and a bit of lecturing.
As usual, this conference appears to be for the benefit of the 'chiefs' of the industry, not the 'Indians'! This was the case with much of the discussion regarding digital tachographs— drivers never get a look-in with matters such as smart cards.
Jam not a union member and do not consider that any of the unions on offer fairly represent the likes of me. However, with nearly 40 years of varied experience in the transport industry I believe that I can offer considerable expertise when it comes to formulating new rules and regulations, from both a driver and operational perspective.
I feel that input such as mine would be invaluable at conferences like the one currently on offer, but can! justify taking a day out and spending over f..300just to be a very small minority at such a gathering? I am trying to interest similar colleagues, but their reservations are the same as mine.
Would the organisers prefer that we, the nuts and bolts of the industry simply do not interfere with policymakers on high?
