Driver Hire agency driver Dave Wells loos back on a week of truck-mounted cranes, truc.s and pop music.
To coin a phrase from the Fast Shwow, this week I've been doing mainly HIAB work. The client is a builders' merchants called EH Smith, which is based at Enderby in Leicester. I've worked for them before and they ask for me whenever they need an agency driver. It's always nice to know that my driving skills and personal charms are appreciated!
So when! got the call from Paul McKenna, my boss at Driver Hire Leicester, asking me if! was available for the whole week, I was delighted to say yes.
And, before you ask no, it isn't that Paul McKenna so. despite rumours to the contrary, I'm not in a trance during assignments.
The upside of agency driving is the variety. On the downside, transport managers reserve the most knackered old trucks for me.
But not today. Because I work for them on a regular basis, the guys at Smiths look after me well. So for the whole of this week I've got a six-wheel Foden, which is a nice, comfortable drive. Most importantly, when I've got a full load on board, it's got plenty of power to get me up hills.
The other thing that's essential is the radio reception. Before pulling away! tune in to Radio 1, the sound track of my working life. I like DJs with character so Chris Moyles is a great way to get going in a morning.
So what's on my current favourite play-list? As a teenager I grew up listening to The Smiths, New Order and The Cure, but that's Radio 2 stuff these days.
It's the three 'Ks' that get my fingers tapping on the steering wheel — Keane, The Killers and the Kaiser Chiefs.
So as I slot into Leicester's morning rush hour on my way to my first drop, a load of paving slabs for a garden makeover, it's good to know that I'm in "employment" and, hopefully. "I'm not predicting any riots".
A (very) small prize awaits the reader who can identify which of the three Ks I stole that from! •
