Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition that causes interrupted breathing during sleep. The size and shape of the throat, tonsils and thickness of the neck can all affect the passage of air from mouth to lungs. It is often characterised by snoring, breath-holding and fighting for breath, as well as feeling constantly tired. Most people with OSA are also overweight.
Treatment is extremely effective and involves either simple weight loss, wearing a gum shield or using a continuous positive airway pressure breathing apparatus.
This involves wearing a mask over your nose when you sleep, which delivers compressed air and prevents the airway in your throat closing when you sleep.
It’s not sexy, but those who have used it say they have never enjoyed a better night’s sleep.
