A HYDRAULICALLY actuated disc brake, suitable for mediumweight commercial vehicles with 161n and 171/2in wheels, has been manufactured and designed by Lucas Girling. The new brake is based on the company's successful car disc brake — the Girling Colette.
To satisfy the heavier-duty commercial-vehicle application, the brake works on the principle of single-sided action together with a pin-sliding arrangement that provides the required clamping force when the brake is in operation.
This method ensures that the brake fluid is well away from the disc, avoiding fluid vaporisation at high disc temperatures. The pin slides, fully sealed and lubricated for life, require little or no maintenance during the life of the vehicle.
The pads can be viewed without having to remove the brake assembly and they are withdrawn radially after the removal of one pin. Pad replacement is made simpler by the fact that both pads are identical and the adoption of semi-metallic lining are said to offer significant improvements in performance and increase pad f ife.
