• A new device designed to deter fuel thieves is being launched after police warned that existing products may be too expensive for hauliers to buy Called Fuelalert, it triggers an alarm if fuel levels start to drop when a vehicle is stationary. It can be linked to mobile
or land-line phones, allowing drivers and operators to monitor their trucks from a distance.
Ian Ross, sales and marketing executive of Autotextaiert in South 1(yme, Lincs, says the device costs £95, the vehicle alarm is £110 and the link to phones via satellite is 2211 (all prices inc VAT).
"If you think the amount of fuel in one tank is worth about £350, we have produced a unit that is a third of that cost and provides 24-hour monitoring," he says.
Development of Fuelalert was prompted by talks with the Spalding police Crime Reduction Unit which says fuel theft is on the lncreas€ CRU member PC Bob Fre says: "This is a national prol and the technology is then solve it—it is just getting it al right price so contractors hauliers use it."
