DY using an oil-engined 7-tonner 1-; weighing under 3 tons unladen, United Canners, Ltd., have been able to deliver strawberries from Wisbech to Dundee, a distance of 400 miles, in 16 hours at an economic cost. The maximum time permissible between culling and canning strawberries is 24 hours.
The vehicle is a Big Bedford with a Perkins R.6 oil engine and a Bonallack light-alloy drop-sided body which weighs 6 cwt. and costs £275.
The journey was planned to be completed in a 36-hour cycle. To comply with the law, the first driver on the outward run from Wisbech to Dundee hands over 'to a second driver in Newcastle, upon Tyne. After a night's rest, the first driver returns to Wisbech with another vehicle delivered to him in Newcastle by his relief.
