SWANSEA-CORK RUN
• A new RO-RO ferry service from Swansea to Cork starts operating from 15 April. The new company — Swansea Cork Ferries — has chartered the 7,800 tonne Celtic Pride which will have space for 20 15-metre vehicles, and will make five return sailings a week on the 10-hour route during the summer season.
Departure time from Swansea is 9pm and the return sailing from Cork leaves at 9am. Exact details of sailing times can be checked by calling the Escombe Group in Swansea on (0792) 42971, or for traffic from Ireland from RA Burke in Cork, phone Cork 371 768/787 or 373 404/261, The Celtic Pride will operate a minimum of three return trips in low season, increasing to four in mid-season. Freight drivers will be provided with free meals and cabin accommodation.
Swansea Cork Ferries is funded jointly by local authorities in South Wales and South West Ireland and is backed by an Irish Government grant of £500,000. The Welsh shareholder in the new company is West Glamorgan County Council, its Irish opposite numbers are Cork Corporation, Cork County Council and Kerry County Council.
