• After much brouhaha about aunching a £25 million letter ;ervice to rival the Post Office this summer (CM 3-9 March), parcels carrier Postplan has betome more cautious about its Dture ambitions under new )wner Interlink.
New managing director Marin Peacock, who took over from general manager Lee Myers in May, says he is "determining the future of the :ompany" with extensive market research. He says he has a dear idea of where the company will go, but will not comment on a possible direct challenge to the Post Office.
Private carriers are prevented by law from charging under £1 for a letter or parcel but Peacock says the ruling (the British Telecommunications Act 1971) is not clear on this: We have got to be very careful, and can't fall foul of the law," he says.
Peacock will only say that a launch of a service outside its present Greater London patch is likely by Christmas, but hints that the network could offer several features unique to the parcels industry. "We will not copy anyone," he says.
Postplan is only one of a package of business ventures announced recently by Interlink's managing director and founder Richard Gabriel (CM I 7-13 July).
