OVER HALF of the trucks checked in the latest Operation Mermaid roadside check were in a dangerous condition or had drivers who were breaking the law.
Last week Northamptonshire police teamed up with the Department for Transport. Leicester police and the Vehicle Operator Services Agency for an eight-hour blitz on HG Vs at Crick weighbridge on the MI.
Police stopped 42 trucks, of which 23 were found to be committing one or more offences.
Four vehicles were issued with immediate prohibitions and 12 got delayed prohibitions for defects including loose wheelnuts and no brake lights. Two vehicles were given prohibitions for running overweight and two drivers were warned for carrying excess weight. One offence related to the carriage of hazardous goods.
Officers also issued three drivers with immediate prohibitions for taking insufficient rest and two drivers were cautioned for failing to complete the centre fields of their tachograph charts.
