CUSTOMS OFFICERS seized cannabis with a street value of up to £2.5m from a truck as it arrived at Poole Ferryport last Wednesday morning (26 November).
A tonne of cannabis resin was found hidden in a pallet of ceramic tiles on board the vehicle after it arrived from Cherbourg. The driver, from Winsford, Cheshire, was questioned by Customs & Excise but was later released on bail pending further enquires.
Customs spokesman Bob Gaiger says this clearly demonstrates the importance of Customs' new methods of working: "Poole Ferryport should not be seen as a soft touch by smugglers. In line with the government's drug strategy, Customs' main priority relating to drugs is to reduce the availability of Class A drugs. But we continue to uphold the law relating to other illegal drugs, including cannabis."
