RESTRICTIONS ON trucks transiting Austria are to continue for another three years despite protests from haulage leaders.
Last week the European Parliament granted a stay of execution for the ecopoints system which was due to expire at the end of next month.
The decision has angered the International Road Transport Union (IRU), even though the cleanest vehicles will be exempt from the restrictions.
Hubert Linssen, head of the 1RU delegation to the EU. says: "This outcome ensures that Europe's economic development and integration continues to be restricted, even though the restriction may now he less severe." Ecopoints are allocated to each country and used up on the basis of how much pollution each of its trucks causes.
The most heavily polluting vehicles will be banned iron Austria altogether from Janu. ary 2004, even though Austriar hauliers will be allowed to ust them for domestic transport.

The original total of nine million ecopoints will be cut to 6.6 million in 2004 and by a further 5% a yeat in 2005 and 2006.
Many Austrian MEPs don't like the latest agreement either they predict that it will damage the Alpine environment.
