HAULIERS in the Yorkshire town of Hall will long remember the month of December, 1948. During that month the British Transport Commission added 29 names to its growing list of acquired undertakings, and of these no fewer than 14 were in Hull..

The December acquisitions brought the total number of undertakings acquired by the B.T.C. at December 31 to 219.

Speaking at a function at the Worshipful Company of Carmen (reported above), Sir Cyril Hurcomb said that, apart from some 8,000 horses still employed by the Railway Executive, the B.T.C. already owned about 200 road haulage undertakings, operating more than 6,000 mechanical vehicles. With the vehicles inherited from the former railway companies, the Commission had more than 10,000 vehicles.

BRADFORD PRICES UP

, QN Monday the prices of Bradford

l0-cwt. vans and lorries were increased by £25, and the cost "of. the six-light van by £15. ,The price of the de luxe van remains unaltered at £410.

The new prices of 'Bradford models are as follows:—Van, £335; lorry, £325; chassis, •£265; six-seater utility, £355 (plus £99 7s. 3d. purchase tax);.six-light van, £350; de luxe utility, £415 (plus £116 Os. 7d. purchase tax); and de luxe van, £410.

Production of Bradford vehicles and Javelin cars is being temporarily reduced, because of a shortage of sheet steel. Output in the next two or three months is likely to be about TO per cent. less than in the latter part of 1948. The cut will affect the home market, rather thati the export trade. Forty employees are being stood off.
