A MOVE for the holding of a rI national conference, representative of the road panels of the Regional Committees of the Road and Rail Central Conference, for discussion of the road haulage-rates schedule tabled by the Yorkshire Regional Committee, was made at a meeting in Leeds last week.
The meeting was attended by members of the road panels of the Yorkshire, North-Western and West Midland Regional Committees, under the presidency of Mr. J. T. Rodwell, of Wombwell, chairman of the Yorkshire road panel, and chairman of the Yorkshire S.J.C. As we have previously reported, the schedule put forward by the Yorkshire road panel, with the Yorkshire rail panel's approval in principle, is in substitution for road rates stabilization according to " streams of -traffic." It is on a time and mileage basis, and can be applied more or less universally, with provision for adjustments accord., ing to the type of traffic which is being handled. Following its submission to the Road and Rail Central Conference, the schedule has been circulated for consideration by the Regional Committees,
The Leeds meeting unanimously adopted a resolution suggesting that the principles of the schedule presented promising possibilities for general adoptidn to meet a difficult problem, and requesting that a national conference of all Regional Committee's road panels be convened,, through the Central Conference, so as to give art opportunity for a thorough and representative discussion of the plan.
The road panel of the Northern Regional Committee was not represented, but wrote expressing support for the principles embodied in the schedule.
