• Suggestions that the Government was not conducting enough research into the problems of lorry parking were rejected in the Commons last week.
The Government was aware of the problem and had taken action, said Mr Michael Heseltine, Under-Secretary for the Environment. He pointed out that the Highways Bill gave powers for the provision of lorry parks, and said that various experiments were being sponsored by the Department to cope with some of the overnight parking problems, particularly in residential areas.
The special difficulties facing London had earlier been stressed by Mr Michael McNair-Wilson (Tory, Walthamstow East) who said that the number of very large lorries parking in the capital every night could grow to 5000.
