.,Major Hayter was alluding to reports -that supporters' of the proposed area 'scheme for passenger transport in the .North East were saying that even if the.establiShment of the scheme resulted in increases in fares, it would not be the 'result' of nationalization The reason given -for this report is that many operators in the Area were already making, or were about to make, application for fare increases.
Durham County Council has decided to support the Area Scheme. Being the biggest local government unit in the Area, however, the Council is insisting on representation on the • Board. Up to now, Tynemouth Corporation is the only municipal authority which has announced its opposition to the
Scheme. Others, especially those controlling transport undertakings, whilst approving co-ordination, wish to retain control over their transport systems..
