STUDIFS of the traffic experiment at Putney High Street, London, S.W.15, have been ordered by the Minister of Transport, The experiment, which incorporates bans on loading, unloading. waiting and right turns, tidal traffic movement and changes of bus stops, was proposed by the London Travel Committee three years ago.
Putney High Street was one of 23 sites selected by the committee, but action was deferred following a public inquiry. The progress of the experiment, which started on Monday, will be closely watched by the committee. Results may determine future action at other places.
Tidal traffic control involves allowing heavy traffic for the City and West End two-thirds of the road space between 8-10 a.m. The arrangements are reversed between 4.30-6.30 p.m. London Transport Executive observers on Tuesday considered that this had been a success. Normal delays of up to 25 minutes in the morning were reduced to five or six minutes. There were hardly any delays in the evening.
As reported last week, the Traders' Road Transport Association have asked members for their views on the effects of the experiment.
