Thornycroft Chassis
Swiftsure 30 m.p.h. 6-61-tonner, 24ton Gross Eight-wheeler and Trident Tractor ALOW-WEIGHT 6-61-ton goods chassis and a maximum-load eight-wheeler have been added to the Thornycroft range; they are to be seen for the first time at the Scottish Show, which opens at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, next Friday. Also to be shown will be a new Trident forwardcontrol tractive unit of 8-ft. 6-in, wheelbase, having Scammell 10-ton coupling gear.
The Swiftsure 6-6f-ton goods vehicle will have a works-built light-alloy body and reinforced glass-fibre cab; . the standard cab is of all-steel construction, but the glass-fibre cab may be offered as an alternative. Power is provided by a-Thorny-croft 1R6 six-cylindered Oil
engine of 4.18-litre capacity.
This unit develops 80 b.h.p. at a governed speed of 2,600 r.p.m., the maximum torque of 184 lb.-ft. being delivered at 1,600 r.p.m. Forged gears made of light alloy are used in the timing drives. The nitrided crankshaft is fitted with a torsional vibration damper and the main bearings and connecting-rod bearings are of the thinwall, pre-finished, copper-lead-lined type.
Oil fed to the crankshaft bearings is fully filtered, but the by-pass oil passes directly back to the sump without filtration.
A single-plate clutch, 12 in. in B8
diameter, transmits the drive to a fourspeed gearbox. A two-piece propeller shaft, with centre bearing, conveys the drive to the spiral-bevel back axle. Needle-roller couplings are employed on the tail shaft, with a Layrub joint behind the gearbox.
Semi-elliptic springs are used, those at the rear being designed to give a progressive action. The two-leadingshoe brakes are hydraulically operated in conjunction with vacuum-servo mechanism.
A two-way adjustable seat, in combination with a steering wheel having a 3-in, height adjustment, makes for a comfortable driving position irrespective of the stature of the driver.
The Swiftsure is offered with a wheelbase of 13 ft. 6 in. as a general-purpose chassis, or with a wheelbase of 11 ft. as a tipper. The tipper has a one-piecepropeller shaft.
Should the chassis be required for a tanker, no alterations to the exhaust system would be necessary, as the exhaust pipe is taken across the chassis to the off side. The Thornycroft eight-wheeler meets the new regulations permitting 24 tons on four axles. It will be made available with a double-drive bogie, in which form it will be shown, and with a trailing dead axle.
A Thornycroft QR6 six-cylindered direct-injection oil engine of 9.83-litre caPacity supplies the power. This unit develops 140 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m., the maximum torque . being 420 -lb.-ft. at 1,000 r.p.m.
Power-assisted steering is introduced on this model, the source of power being a gear-type pump on the engine, , with he hydraulic control . valve mounted integrally with the manual control gear. The camshaft, injection pump and all auxiliaries are gear driven, there being a separate train of gears driving the lubricating-oil pump and the powersteering pump.
A 16-ia. single-plate clutch takes the drive to a four-speed .main and a twospeed auxiliary gearbox. The bogie axles are worm-driven. The tyres are
of 9.00 by 20 section (12 ply), The brakes are air-pressure operated.
The'Trident tractor, with a wheelbase of ft. 6 in., is available with forward control and Searnmell 10-ton coupling gear. With a semi-trailer, the unit has been designed for a gross vehicle weight of 16 tons on inner-zone and general short-distance operation.
In general design and layout, this model follows that of the Trident range, the specification including the CR6/1 5.51-litre direct-injection oil engine developing 90 .b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m., a five-speed gearbox and Eaton two-speed axle.
