• by Bryan Jarvis York-based TJ Frazier has entered the rapidly shrinking British vehicle manufacturing world with a high-speed allterrain vehicle aimed at the market between a conventional Land Rover and the heavier duty Unimog.
Designed by RTT Design of Seaton Ross and built under licence, Frazier's 5.7-tonne Pioneer 4x4 will cost around £30,000. It is aimed squarely at the agriculture, construction, civil engineering and public utility sectors.
The first one to be built has a 3,0tonne carrying capacity and is capable of accepting a range of auxiliary equipment irciuding gritters, snow-ploughs, aerial platforms, crop sprayers and fire-fighting gear.
For a strong on/off-road performance RU has chosen Land Rover running gear: a 111hp (83kW) 300Tdi charge-cooled diesel with a five-speed synchromesh gearbox.
It also features a high/low transfer box, permanent four-wheel drive in all gears and a centre-lockable diff for off-road use.
The Lancashire-made FPW axles are rated at 2.5 tonnes front and 3.2 tonnes rear; they are located using fabricated A-frames and Panhard rods with heavy-duty coil springs and long-travel hydraulic dampers.
RU chose a rigid ladder frame chassis of high. yield steel with tubular cross-members. Tyres are Michelin 335/80 R20 MPTs with self-clearing treads.
On the road the vehicle is capable of 64mph (104km/h); off-road it has a gradeability of 42% (1-in-2.4) or better, depending on its load. For stopping power Ka has opted for all-round discs with twin calipers on the front and a transmission park brake.
Its wheelbase is 3.0m with an overall width of 2.33m on a 2.0m track. Ground clearance is 340mm at the differentials and the approach angles are 45° front and rear. Steering lock angle is 35°.
The basic day cab is an angular forward-control steel structure that tilts for access to the engine and is equipped with fully adjustable seats. The controls
and instrumentation are straight out of the Iveco Cargo parts catalogue.
