• The Road Haulage Association is discussing with the Ministry of Agriculture possible changes in the law which will allow suitably constructed vehicles carrying livestock on more than one deck to use drive-on/ drive-off ferries. It was reported at a recent meeting of the RHA livestock group that double-decker vehicles were being turned back by Ministry officials at ports.
It is pointed out by the RHA that the Animals (Sea Transport) (Amendment) Order 1932 which prohibits the carriage of animals in tiers in a container on the deck of a ship was enacted before the introduction of ferries of a type now increasingly used for carrying goods to and from the Continent.
