Department lorTransport funding comes under the Sustainable Distribution Fund, which allocates £25.5m to two schemes — modal shift and an efficiency programme.
The Freight Facilities Grant (FFG) scheme, which helps offset the cost of providing rail and water freight handling facilities, has £7m in the pot. Five grants were made in July, totalling E1 .2m. The Rail Environmental Benefit Procurement Scheme (REPS) helps companies with the costs of running rail freight instead of road (where rail is more expensive than road).
For those with wider aspirations in the intermodal sector there are also grants for water transport.
These two schemes share £18.5m of government money, which also pays for Freight Best Practice which offers consultancy and transport efficiency advice and the Safe and Fuel Efficiency Driverscheme (SAFED). SAFED was recently awarded an extra C1. 2m to help with driver training until 2010.
