AFTER A quiet period, speculation regarding further consolidation in the European truck industry moved up a gear in August with a number of stories linking MAN and Scania in the UK and European press.
In mid-August, MAN boss Rudolph Rupprecht set the rumour mill grinding at the company's half-year results briefing when he appeared to indicate the company wanted to look at deeper co-operati on possibilities with Scania. Later in the month,Scania boss Leif Ostling moved to clarify the position in an interview with German weekly Wirtschaftwoche, ruling out any possibilities of a merger, although he added he could imagine a 'deeper' co-operation between the two truck builders.
Earlier this year. MAN and Scania announced a joint tie-up on axles and transmissions; any further co-operation could include cabs and engines.
