A New Conversion
A CONVERSION of the Austin 1-ton van to a I-1 Countryman model is now being carried out by Kenex Coachwork, Ltd., 54-56 Castle Street, Dover. The aim is to provide a dual-purpose vehicle having additional seating capacity, but to maintain maximum load space for goods.
The standard petrol tank is replaced by an arrangement which allows space beneath the floor for the provision of a full-width sunken well immediately behind the front seats. This affords a minimum of 14 in. footroom and correspondingly adequate knee room for the rear-seat passengers.
A bench-type seat fitted with additional side cushions is placed just foeward of the wheel-arches. The main seat assembly is 38 in. wide, 15 in. deep and has a 16-in, folding backrest, whilst the side cushions increase the effective scat width to 54 in. When not in use, the complete main seating unit folds forward into the footwell to rest close up against the front seats.
Full-length windows in polished metal frames are provided within the swaging of the body sides, and each has a half-sliding glass panel.
The basic. model is priced at £850, including purchase tax, but a de luxe version is available which can incorporate a variety of additional items.
