AN order for 20 trolleybus chassis, to be fitted with Metrovick electrical equipment, has been placed with British United Traction, Ltd., by Oporto Municipality, Portugal. It was secured in the face of strong Continental competition, particularly from Italy.
Bodies will be built in Portugal upon the chassis, which have a wheelbase of 17 ft. 6 in. Oporto has severe gradients and heavy passenger loadings, and the motor selected is of 135 b.h.p. Sales of Austin commercial vehicles in Portugal last year rose by 50 per cent. Those of Thames vehicles declined, and the German Ford Co. benefited by this. At December 31, 1956, however, there were more Thames vehicles in Portugal than of any other make-6,662, followed by Bedford with 5.407 and Austin 4,444, Total number of commercial vehicles registered rose from 41,700 to 47,750 during last year.
