A DOUBLE-DECK bus-side advertisement that moves, the first of its kind in the world, has been developed by the Yorkshire Traction Co. Ltd.
Part of an 18ft-long by 20in.-wide advertisement, the moving section measures 2ft 7-i-in, by 20in. and provides for three message changes. These changes are obtained from the three faces of 10 revolving prisms, the face of each prism being 3M. wide. The spindles on which the prisms are mounted are revolved by means of a shaft and gearing which is driven by an electric motor —each sequence of changes being activated electronically as the passenger platform door is opened and closed.
Each time the door of the double-deck vehicle is opened the message sequence is started but to ensure that each message is fully seen by the public, the sequence always ends one message on from the one it commenced with. The brain child of Mr. Jim Skyrme, chairman, the moving advertisement was developed in 10 months by the company's general manager, Mr. Peter Wyke Smith, and chief engineer, Mr. Alan Gurley.
It will be seen on the streets of Barnsley early next week carrying a brewer's advertisement in colour.
