A device for quickly. stopping a diesel engine in conditions when it is likely to run on and cause a fire or an explosion, has been introduced by Engineering Services (Wilton). Called the Pyroban, the device, takes the form of a cylinder of approximately 91n diarnet5r and 9in. deep and enables an operator of a crane, fork-lift truck, compressor unit or other type of diesel-engined equipment quickly to stop a diesel engine operating in an atmosphere of inflammable vapour. Fitted inside the standard air filter of the engine, the unit is operated by pressure from a standard carbon-dioxide fire extinguisher cylinder activated by a plunger. The gas is allowed to by-pass the valve to prevent a vacuum.
The presence of the carbondioxide in the engine eliminates the possibility of drawing in air or lubricating oil to the cylinders. A flame trap is fitted in the device as an added precaution to prevent ignition through the air inlet. Pyroban can be repeatedly used with renewals of the carbon-dioxide cylinder. Its use does not harm an engine.
Price: £75.
