ROAD CASUALTIES rose by less than the volume of traffic in 1978, according to the Department of Transport.
Traffic increased by over four per cent, but there was only a 0.5 per cent rise in the number of deaths and injuries in accidents.
Deaths rose by three per cent to 6831, seriously injured casualties rose by one per cent to 82,518, and the figure (260,446) of slightly injured remained above level.
Other road users, which includes commercial vehicles, showed a drop in the number of deaths from 377 to 354, and in those injured from 30 to 29.
Provisional estimates for the first quarter of 1979 have been helped by the bad weather, and show that traffic overall decreased by two per cent. Injuries dropped by between five and six per cent.
