Now that most of the opinions regarding the use of the tachograph have been aired I would like to draw attention to the instrument itself.
I find it hard to accept that, in the age of the microprocessor, "living rock" watch and other modern electronic aids a medieval, 20 years behind the times piece of equipment is still in use.
Styli scratching paper discs, cables turning gears — causing calibrating problems after transmission repair — and laborious analysis of charts must rate as a reverse step in technology.
Why can't an instrument giving instant readout for the various activity durations, including a paper record —(similar to a modern cash register) — with a transducer, (a la anti-lock braking), fitted to the propeller shaft be developed?
