A NEW HATCHBACK VAN based on the Polo car is to be launched in Europe early in the spring by Volkswagen. VAG has yet to confirm when the Polo van will be available in Britain, although two pre-production models are already in the UK undergoing Type Approval.
The Polo van will be built at VW's Wolfsburg assembly plant and is expected to be powered by the 29kW (40hp) four-cylinder 1.05 litre petrol engine currently fitted in the Polo car.
A van version of the Polo would allow VAG to compete on a more equal footing with hatchback vans such as the Ford Fiesta and Austin Metro, unlike the present Golf van which falls between conventional hatchback vans, and vehicles based on estate cars or built with specific van bodies, sucy as the Escort and Maestro Van.
