Mr. H. Backhonse, for .Smith's, said it would be dangerous to grant licences for spot loads, [undercutting the regular operator. Harrison's 15-day Rome tour was offered at £45, compared with £65 for 16 days with Smith's. These sporadic operations, starting on a semiprivate party basis, could pay off if the coach was filled, whilst the regular operator could not average more than two-thirds loading.
Mr. F. Williamson, chairman, said the application was almost identical with one made in January. The evidence was no stronger now but the opposition was. Need had not been proved and the application must be refused.
